Outline of Program (Summer 2008)
 
   1. Required Observations:
      a. Individual sighting hours (must
          complete at least 5 sighting forms).
      b. Mass Sighting Day - must complete
          2 hour shift on assigned day.
      c. Harbor Patrol Tour - must partici-
          pate on at least 1 tour.
      d. Photograph at least one dolphin
          dorsal fin..

  2. Supporting Lab Assignments:
      a. Complete Dorsal Fin I.D. Lab 
          exercise to identify matches in 
          photo database.
      b. Read Cetacean Behavior Notebook
         2002 to familiarize self wtih
         distinct behaviors of dolphins.
    
  3.  I Search Paper:
       a. Review the literature and write a
           brief summary of your findings on
          a topic which is relevant to the
          Coastal Dolphin Survy Project.
          Suggested topics: Dolphins entering
          other harbors; Recent proliferation
          of giant squid off S. Cal; Social
          pairing of dolphins; Dolphin- human
          interactions in the wild.  .
      
  4. Optional fieldtrip to a location of our
      choosing: L.A. Co. Museum of Nat
      History MM warehouse; Marine
      Mammal care center - Fort
      MacArthur; Whale watch cruise, etc.

Whale Watch Cruise - Friday, 01/12/08 - On this day at 1:00 p.m. Dennis Kelly participated in a
  Whalewatch Cruise aboard the vessel Western Pride out of Davey's Locker Sport fishing -
  Newport Harbor.  No migrating gray whales were seen on the cruise but two separate pods of
  bottlenose dolphin were encountered.  The first occured at 2:15 p.m. off Crystal Cove State Park
  and consisted of 25 - 30 Coastal Bottlenose dolphin.  The second encounter occured at 3:20 p.m.
  and was located about five miles offshore from Crystal Cove.  This time it was a larger pod (30 -
  35 dolphin) of Offshore bottlenose dolphin.  See photos below from each of the two sightings.
