| El Nino 2006 - 2007 related phenomena recorded in Southern California recorded in January/February of 2007. 1. Early January 2007 - Jumbo Squid are reported caught by the hundreds off San Diego by many different sport fishing boats. See photo below right. 2. Record freezing temperatures hit California in early to mid January and cause millions of dollars of damage to the citrus and avacado crops. See photo below. 3. At left is a photo Prof Kelly received from Alan Grant (a diver/photograher) on 1/25/07 and included the following explanation: "This beautiful "shell" is actually the egg case of the paper nautilus, Argonauta sp., or argonaut. It is related to an octopus, and looks like a chambered nautilus, with big eyes on each side and short tentacles with suckers. Normally found in tropical waters around the world, I found this one lying in about 30 feet of water last week while diving at Catalina Island. It probably represents an aberrant El Nino current from Mexico washing this up to Catalina. The case is paper thin and quite brittle. A friend of mine, Angel Valdes, who is curator of Molluscs, has asked me to donate it to the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History."
