Marine Science 120:  Marine Aquarium Science Class.  Spring Semester 2008 Ticket # 30057 
   Fridays, 11:00 - 12:10 a.m. + 2 hours arranged per week working in the O.C.C. Public
   Aquarium. 1 unit.  Professor Dennis Kelly

  
Course Description: This is a full credit class offered through the O.C.C. Marine Science  
   Department to students interested in setting up a home aquarium, aquarium science, fish,
   shellfish, aquarium management, and careers in the aquarium field.  This class gives students
   the opportunity to work in a public aquarium with live marine organisms, as they learn the
   techniques for collecting organisms; maintaining them in captivity; feeding; cleaning; repair;
   record keeping; animal husbandry methods; disease detection, treatment, and prevention;
   water quality asssessment and management; use of state of the art instruments and equipment;
   and many other aspects of aquarium science.  Students will work with both cool temperate
   and warmer tropical water species and systems.  Students will learn how to work with others,
   collaboratively, to assure that an aquarium is run successfully.  There will be reading
   assignments, quizzes, writing assignments, field trips, work assignments, and a midterm and
   final exam.  From experience in this class students can become qualified to in a large public
   aquarium as an aquarium assistant or successfully set up, care for, and maintain persona home
   or private aquariums.  In addition to the above, some students go on to work for one of the
   several aquarium service companies or tropical fish stores in Orange County.

The O.C.C. Public Aquarium works with
  other institutions to further the goals of
  marine aquarium science.  One of our
  partners is the Aquarium ad Aquaculture
  Science Program at Saddleback College.
  Julie Anderson created this wonderful
  Occupational Certificate, Assoicate Degree,
  or Transfer Program over the last three

   Dana Point Harbor.  There they were given a
   tour of the aquarium systems and education
   facilities by "Jennifer" - on the the aquarium
   staff.
