01/19/08 : WAR IN THE ANTARCTIC OCEAN TO SAVE THE
  WHALES:  Members of the Crew of the Sea Shepard Conservation Society
  ship - Farley Mowat - attempted to stop and then successfully boarded the
  Japanese Whaling ship Yushim Maro No. 2.
  Paul Watson, Captain of the Farley Mowat,
  is quoted as having said that the two crew
  members were "hostages" of the Japanese
  Whaling ship.  The Japanese Whaling Fleet's
  objective this year was to kill 50 humpback
  whales and hundreds of smaller minke
  whales during their "scientific whaling".

01/28/08: U.S. Navy begins exercise off southern California utilizing
  middle frequency sonar possibly dangerous to marine mammals.
  Operating between Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island off
  southern California - the U.S. Navy Carrier Task force - led by the U.S.S.
  Abraham Lincoln (an aircraft carrier pictured below) began operations
  to practice for the detection of "quiet" enemy diesel submarines.  The
  Navy is operating under restrictions placed on it by U.S. District Judge
  Florence-Marie Cooper to protect marine mammals, despite the fact that
  President Bush intervened and exempted these exercises from federal laws.
